A body temperature of -3°C (26°F) was measured for the Arctic ground squirrel of Alaska and north - west Canada. Its body temperature drops below freezing when in a state of suspended animation during its hibernation period in the Arctic water. Its normal body temperature in the summer months is 37°C. Its hibernation, which can last up to nine months, is the longest hibernation by a rodent I the world.
