The electric
eel (Electrophorus electricus) , is an electric fish, and the only
species of the genus Electrophorus. It is capable of generating powerful
electric shocks, which it uses for both hunting and self - defense. It is an
apex predator in its South American range. Despite its name it is not an eel
but rather a knife fish.
Up to 1.8m
(6 ft) in length, the fish is live from head to tail with its electrical apparatus
consisting of two pairs of longitudinal organs. The shock which can measure up
to 650 volts is used to immobilize prey and is strong enough to light an
electric bulb or to stun an adult human.
